8 Day Itinerary for November 2009 through March 2010:
- Day 1 - Depart the U.S. for Italy.
- Day 2 - Amalfi Coast: After connecting in Rome, proceed to baggage claim in the Naples airport. Once clearing customs, you will be met by the local Club ABC Tours representative and transferred to your hotel.
The famed Amalfi Coast or Costiera Amalfitana is a stunning coastline set along the rugged mountains and winds down the western coast of Italy from Sorrento to Salerno in the region of Campania. Many miles of hairpin turns offer spectacular vistas with changing views of landscapes, rocks plunging vertically in to the clear sea, charming fishing villages with brightly colored boats set in the small harbors, vibrant vegetation and colorful flowering plants, houses and hotels nestled high in the rocks above the winding coastline - all contrasting dramatically with the brilliant blues of the Mediterranean waters. Transfer to your hotel. Tonight dinner is at the hotel. (Dinner)
- Day 3 - Amalfi Coast/Sorrento/Amalfi Coast: After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy a full-day excursion exploring the enchanting towns along the picturesque Costiera Amalfitana. We begin with Amalfi, which origins date back to both the Roman and Byzantine Empires. It once rivaled Genoa and Pisa in its maritime importance and still retains its fishing traditions today. As we make our way to Sorrento, we'll see Positano from above and glimpse its buildings, clinging to the rocks. In the center of town, view the colored dome of Santa Maria Assunta, Positano's main church.
The Sorrento Peninsula is an area particularly known for its unique landscape, where low and high hills, deep valleys and majestic mountains alternate, and where the most impervious areas were transformed into the famous terraces cultivated with orange and lemon trees degrading towards the sea. Poets and writers have described Sorrento as the land of colors and Mermaids. Sorrento is indeed a very pretty city where kindness and hospitality are a combination that is handed down from one generation to the next. Stop for lunch and a limoncello (on your own), then enjoy the rest of the day at the hotel. This evening, enjoy dinner at the hotel. (Breakfast, Dinner)
- Day 4 - Amalfi Coast: Today is a free day. You may choose to wander on your own or take an optional tour. (Breakfast)
- Day 5 - Cetara: Enjoy breakfast at your hotel. Afterwards, you will meet your local representative at the hotel. Today, we will visit a market in the picturesque, seaside village of Cetara. The village was an important fishing harbor beginning in Roman times and is still the main fishing harbor for the entire Amalfi Coast. Later, enjoy a cooking demonstration and lunch at Al Convento Restaurant. The remainder of the day will be at leisure. (Breakfast, Lunch)
- Day 6 - Pompeii/Naples: After breakfast, we will visit Pompeii, Italy's most famous and unique archeological site. Frozen in time when the city was buried by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79, Pompeii is now, a World Heritage site. Its excavation has provided a picture of life during the height of the Roman Empire.
From Pompeii, we will drive to Naples. As the capital of the Campania region, Naples is known for its history, art, culture and, especially, gastronomy. Since the city and pizza are synonymous, we will have lunch in a typical Neapolitan pizzeria. Afterwards, we'll visit the historical center of Naples. Highlights of the tour include Old Town, Posillipo, Piazza del Plebiscito, San Carlo Theatre, and its castles. Tonight, we'll have dinner in a local restaurant. (Breakfast, Lunch)
- Day 7 - Amalfi Coast: Today is at leisure. Optional tours will be available. Tonight, enjoy a farewell dinner at your hotel. (Breakfast, Dinner)
- Day 8 - Amalfi Coast/U.S.: After breakfast transfer to the airport for your return flight home. (Breakfast)
